Evaluation of the reading presentations

Dear FLE 304 members,
Please comment on the successful aspects of the reading presentations that you have observed and the aspects that need to be improved. Also evaluate the presentations in terms of the following aspects: aim of the lesson, student participation, the clarity of the stages, the use of audio/visual aids, the interest level and motivation of the students, the pacing of the material, the variety of pair/group/individual activities, the clarity of instructions, and the teachers' interest in teaching the lesson.

  1. First of all, I want to thank our friend for her contribution to our class. It was an interesting experience; because, she is teaching this course in her practice teachings and now i have an idea what we will do next year.
If I am to evaluate her presentation, I can say that it was a succesful one on the whole, because she was relax and humanist and seemed quite confident. All of the students were encouraged to participate into the topic,a number of visual aids were used and this arouse curiosity and motivation among the students. Activities were fun and we enjoyed the class because we did not stuck to only one kind of activity but various. And the teacher seemed quite enthusiastic and the activities were arranged succesfully. However the only thing that I do not understand much is that, i think the focus of the lesson was on the speaking rather than reading. Of course there were some reading activies but the main focus was on the speaking i think.

  2. I want to thank you to my friend and our teacher from basic English department for their demo teaching. Both of them were very successful in their works. Firstly I want to talk about the instructor's presentation. The reading text's subject was a current topic and was a good choice. The hand-outs were arranged according to the reading process as pre, while and post. Pre-reading activity was a good one because it was somehow like a vocabulary exercise as well. The text was not too long which means that it was not boring. During the answering-the-question process, she kept asking why and how to the students and it showed teacher's enthusiasm to the lecture in my opinion. In the post reading the discussin part was enjoyable as well. The students had the chance of speaking trying to support their sides and had fun. It was a good example and I can use the activities the instructor has used.
When it comes to the second presenter, our friend she was also successful. Her way of pre-reading was composing the text with students with the help of her instructions. It was creative one was but at the same time it was time consuming. While reading activity was so simple in my opinion. It can be improved, there can be different charts may be more complex ones because it was an easy task. Post reading was enjoyable and creative as well. She was confident during her presentation and she seemed really enthusiastic because of the materials that she prepared for the lecture.

  3. The first presenter was (there is no need to say)perfect. The materials that she used were very well prepared. Some of the handouts were printed on colorful papers. It was a good idea to attract students’ attention(especially for young learners). The student participation was very high, all the students were motivated and they were all interested in the lesson. We can understand this by looking at students’ participation, throughout the lesson almost all the students participated the lesson actively. This is a great success for a teacher. In addition, she used different kinds of activities and in this way she prevented the lesson to be boring and unbearable. In short, everything was perfect in her presentation and there is nothing to criticize her. The second presenter was also successful, but there is some points that can be improved. Firstly she had a great amount of self confidence, for a teacher it is a very good feature. In the pre-reading stage she showed only one picture to make us talk about the topic of the text. In my opinion, showing a few more pictures would be better. Another problem was that she spent so much time on pre-reading and for this reason we had to do other activities very fast. She used different kinds of activities most of which were very enjoyable. However some of those activities were too simple for 9th students. She used activities that require both individual and group work, so we didn’t get bored during the lesson. When it comes to teacher’s interest I don’t have much to say because she was very interested in teaching the lesson.

  4. I agree with all of the comments done so far. We had two presentations; one of them is the one that is done in other section, video of which we watch and the other one is the one that is done in class. Both of them has become my guide, they are all good to apply in class and very enjoyable. They gave me important clues about how to teach reading so these presentations have become my torch in my future teaching years.
It is generally hard to make the students participate in class discussions but in both presentation this job is easily and successfully done. The materials used in class are ver colourful, this was also an effective thing for students. Lesson plans were very good and applying them was very successful they were not boring. Both teachers seemed very enthusiastic this effected students to participate in class discussions. We can understand many thing by looking students behaviors for this reason all the things related to these teachings were very successful.

  5. I have almost the same ideas with my friends. The presenations were good and the presenters were qualified. When it comes to discuss about the presentations in detail, I can say that the first one is a perfect one. It shows the presenter’s well preparedness and being professional. Fist of all her prereading acitivites make connection to the students and the text. They prepare the students to the text and activate their schemata related to the text. In addition she gives the vocabulary but does this interactively with the students. Then the text was written and the handouts distributed as prereading activiy was clarified. And then the last acitivity made the students involve and enjoy. I think those activities all increased the comprehension by active participitaion. Besides them visual presenatiation was also good choice and made it clear.
The second one was also good one. The teacher was young, self-confident and warm. She was cheerful and used a bit suggestopedia which provided us a warm environment and relaxed. Her topic was interesting. She used a different technique. She made the students involve in the lesson. Apart from the original text, she wanted us make up different stories about what comes next. It was enjoyable. Then other parts especially the last part was also a good one. It needed our creativity. Then lastly she evaluated our understanding of the passage by wanting us the text again with our own sentences by looking at the first pictures.

  6. ı think all presentations were wonderful and it were very benefical for all of us, so ı wnt to thank you to both presenters. they showed us a way what we will do and how we will teach in the future. ı think they applied all the methods ı could imagine. actually, ı had thought that we would never apply these methods which we learned in the lesson, because our teachers in the high school were not appliying any of these methods. uor friends proved me that we should apply all these methods for teaching effectively. their lesson plans, context, visual materials in the lesson were successful. they used colorful pictures. they could attract the students's interest. they could get them to interested in the lesson. they were relax, the activities were enjoyabla and related to the topic. they used integrated skills and showed us how a real lesson can be teached. so ı thank you to them.

  7. I want to thank to both of the presenters. They were really good. Their presentations gave us an idea about what we will do in our reading presentation. I couldn’t think a reading lesson can be such enjoyable. I especially liked their ways of giving feedback and smiling faces:) I think giving feedback and always having a smile on one’s face is a positive reinforcement for the students. They seemed as if they were greatly getting enjoy from their job which is also a good motivation for the students. Their lessons were integrated which made the lessons more enjoyable. The activities they used were creative and something new for us, because from our past experiences we were used to traditional methods. I can say that I were thinking that the methods in the book can’t be applied in a real classroom environment, but from the presentations I saw that they can be applied and are very suitable to a reading lesson. They were beneficial for our reading presentations…
    Thanks presenters:)

  8. I think both of the presentations were good and they helped me to create my own ideas about preparing a presentation, because when I think about my old experiences I notice that I didn't know much about the different kinds of reading activities. However these presentations show that a reading lesson can be fun and students can enjoy it. Also the presenters were relax and creative, which is very important in teaching. They used visual aids effectively to integrate the students into lessons. Sometimes students didn't want to speak in the lesson, but they tried to make students participate in the lesson by asking them different questions.I also want to say that the materials they used were suitable for the level of the studnets. They were colorful and well-prepared.

  10. The presentation we watched in video and the one done in our class were very good and successful; but I think the one we watched was better with its topic and activities done. For example, there was a debate part in that presentation and all the students took one of the parts, they were either for or against group and some of them were jury members. In a debate as all the participants have to contribute, they did their best and I believe in a debate all students try to their best so there can be good atmosphere in the class. The one done in our class was also very good and useful. It was a good guide for our own presentation. Our friend using pictures is a good technique because children like these kinds of things (pictures, video etc.). the activities were well prepared, especially the last writing section. She showed us some pictures and wanted us to combine them and write the story again, that was a useful.
I thank two presenters for contributing and guiding us. And lastly these presentations gave us some idea about what we are going to do next year in our practice teaching.
