Dear FLE 304 members,
The folowing is a useful technique that you can use at the pre- and post-reading stages of teaching reading. You can go to website http://www.wordle.net/ and click on the icon"create your own". Then paste your text and click on the icon"go". You will get a nice design full of key words in the text. Please comment on how we can use this technique in teaching reading.

This technique, I mean this way of introducing the text to the students would be lovely, really lovely and funny and also informative. It can be easily used for the vocabulary tasks and activities. We can produce some charts and we want our stydents to match the charts and the vocanularied in this wordle type. It can be improved according to the process. we also support our students to use this style also.
ReplyDeleteI think we can use this technique while teaching vocabulary items in the text we are going to cover, especially. It is a very attractive and colorful for young learners. we can use this wordle type both to make charts and to want the learners to make their own charts. In this way, we can get their attention and make them participate in the lesson.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, the technique is quite interesting and beneficial; because, using visual aids in language learning is quite crucial. By using them, teachers can attract students' attention and make topics much more interesting for the students. Moreover, unknown words can be introduced to students while they are trying to get the main points of the reading material.
ReplyDeleteUsing those lovely clouds will make the reading sessions very enjoyable because they will provide students with an outline of the reading text and they will make the understanding of the students’ easier. According to the proficiency level of the students the teacher can use tag clouds in many different ways. For example at the beginning of the lesson the teacher can show a tag cloud of the text and ask the students to guess what the text is about. The students can tell their guesses orally or the teacher can ask them to make a guess and write a little text using the tag cloud by working in groups. Another way is that at the end of the lesson the students can form their own tag clouds. In this way the teacher can test the students’ understanding of the text.
ReplyDeleteBesides being agree with friends already commented, I believe that it is a perfect visual aid to be used especially for pre-reading stage. It gives many clues about the passage that will be read and makes the students familiar with the topic before it is read by them. This becomes an important step for beginning a reading job if someone has this step then it means that he or she is one more step far away from other students in understanding this material.
ReplyDeleteI think that this can be used for both pre and post reading. It is perfect for vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very well-known fact that when we integrate audio and visual input for vocabulary, the learnin will be more permanent, efficient and fun. So, when we use this thing, it will not only show the vocabulary items, but it will show them randomly, colorfully, and in different directions, which will attract attention. I studied for YDS vocabulary by writing the words in colors and then their meanings with a pencil. Then, I not only enjoyed more reading and studying them, but also remembered them better and even I could tell in which color they were written. So colors play an important role in vocabulary, somehow making all more memorable.
In pre reading, we can introduce the unfamiliar vocabulary and read all the words aloud and ask students to repeat. After we analyze the text, we can have a look at them for a second time and they will have seen the words 3 times, once in context and once after reading that context. It can also be a warm-up while intruducing the specific vocabulary, curiosity may arise.

ReplyDeleteI think it is useful for pre-reading and post-reading. It would make our job easier. The words seem colourful, and we can choose the key words/terms from the text. For example nowadays I see a placard which was prepared by using wordle.net on the door of our FLE building. It gets my attention all the time because it is colourful, like a puzzle and includes many words which are all in different places and written in different formats. Espesially some of the words interests me among all other words so I read the text. As an example Işıl Hoca and our friends Bilge and Sena used it (if I do not misremember) and it showed us its usefulness.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a good warm-up activity for the reading pasages. We could write words related to the reading topic with mixed order, different sizes and different fronts so it would help students to make brainstorming and activate their related vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteAfter showing these words , teacher may want students to guess the passage they will read, or he may want students to make up a story. It would be a good speaking activity. Also, it may be used in post reading activities. Teacher may want students to write a short paragragh including these words as a wrinig acitivity.
ı think this method it very creative for students. ı would really use, because it would also enjoyable and lovely.we could use it in the pre and post reading activities. for eaxmple; we could write some vocabulary items with different fonts and sizes so it would arouse their creativity and also it would help them to remember something related to the topic. it would be a brainstorming activity for them. besides, it could be also used for some activities. for example, after analyizing the text, some words can be written in different sizes and fonts in a mixed order and they could match the vocabulary items with some comprehension questions, so this activity could develop their learnings in the lesson, and could be a really good post reading activity.
ReplyDeleteI think as my friends mentioned this is a very lovely and enjoyable technique. I think students will really love this. We can use this while teaching vocabulary also. It is beneficial in teaching reading. You can give a tag cloud in the pre-reading activities and want students to make guesses about the reading passage. This will take students’ attention as well. Or you can ask them to form their own tag clouds which they will like. It is colorful and it can be written in different fonts and sizes which is really enjoyable. I think I will use tag clouds when I become a teacher. I think tag cloud is a good idea to use in a classroom environment.
ReplyDeleteFirst I thank you for introducing us tagclouds. I didn't know about tagclouds before you introduced it to us. I think tagclouds may be used very effectively in pre-reading and post-reading. In pre-reading, especially, they are very useful because they can be used for brainstorming activities. Seeing words colorfully and together may help students to construct ideas and brainstorm. As a post-reading activity, the terms of newly taught words may be written with tagclouds. It helps to sum up some concepts.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that students will like it a lot. It also gives teachers opportunity to design good materials especially for vocabulary activities like students also can make their own charts. So they will participate lesson enjoying and I want to add that it's also colourful and attractive so suitable for young learners.
