Assignment 1b

Find a video that best reflects the approach that you would take in teaching EFL
reading from an internet site (e.g., youtube or teacher tube or some other website). Why and in what ways do you think this video displays a good example of your preferred methodology in teaching reading? What do you think the teacher and students in the video could do to improve themselves as far as teaching EFL reading is concerned?
It is essential that you upload the video to the classblog. However, if it is impossible to upload it, please give the link to the video.

I have tried to uploasd the video but I could not manage to that and I am sorry for that. (uzantısı farklı olduğu için zaten açılmıyor) Anyway, my favorite way of reading activities or examples are the stories. As you ccan understand from the video, reading stories not only develop our reading skills but also improve our world knowledge.
When we talk about reading stories, books or kind of these materials we also remember the terms 'extensive' and 'intensive'. I believe that both are important. Related to the learners age and level the materials can be changed.Teacher can arrange what should be read or in some cases students can choose their reading materials on their own.
Like the teacher says in the video, some values can be learnt and internalized through reading stories. Activities or samples from the reading material is also important but in my opinion the general meaning and the input construct more value.

  2. Dear Bilge,
Thank you very much for your commentss. I would like to be informed on one issue that you have raised. You have mentioned that the teacher in the video pointed out some values to be learnt and internalized through reading stories. Could you elaborate on that by giving some examples? What kind of values? How can we achieve learning and internalization through reading stories?
Also, could you explain why you like reading stories yourself? How can reading stories help us develop our reading skills and improve our world knowledge? Please give some examples to illustrate your views.

  3. reading is one and mostly the important way of expanding our world views. In the second assignmnet topic I believe that I told about it necessarily but anyway I can give some examples here. I used to read newsweek when I was at high school. This became my habit and through this activity I have learned about american culture, what was going on around the world, political issues, new inventions and so on. beside all these world knowledge, I was improving my reading skills as well. I generally understand the meaning in the magazines. This is what I mean internalization. sometimes you are not even aware of reading somthing because you internalize what you read. all of these information has become my part and I have an idea about that issues (world, politics etc).
I hope I could possibly explained my thoughts, thanks.

I found a video from You Tube which is about how to teach reading to the young children, because I believe that reading English text can be taught through reading English stories. Through stories for beginners and through authentic materials such as novels, essays and newspapers for advanced levels, the notion of English can be internalized. Moreover, the culture of the target language can be much friendlier for the learner. However, there are some important stages to go through to teach reading to the students:
First of all, choosing the right level of the book is so important for me, because reading should be fun for the students not a boring struggle for them. After they read the book, the teacher can make the students to tell the story, or make commends about the story. After a while, the stage of the stories should be harder, of course. Then, when they get more familiar with the reading, they can be introduced some vocabulary that they may find difficult to understand. If they come out other unknown words during the reading process, the reading strategies can be used and they may be asked to figure the meaning out from the context, but again if they fail, the meaning can be given.

In this video an instructor gives advises about how to teach reading to children and how to promote comprehension. I choose such a video because it gives clues that are necessary for understanding a text in the best way a child can do. There are many good points that I agree on. For instance the instructor tells us to show the picture to the students and make them guess what will come next. This is a good strategy to make students think on the reading passage. By making predictions the students will get excited about the story and most probably their motivation will be higher because they will be curious about what will happen in the next page and in order to learn it as soon as possible they will get involved in the reading activity enthusiastically. She also advises asking questions about the story. For example the story in the video tells the things that a caterpillar does and the instructor keeps going on asking questions about it . In this way she makes sure that the children understood what they read and didn’t forget what they read before. Another good point is that she advises asking children to summary the story after they finished it. In this way, we can make sure that the students comprehended everything and they can remember what they read at the beginning and at the end. By using these strategies the teacher can make sure students’comprehension and remembering that are important skills for a good reading. I’ll use all of these strategies in teaching reading because they all reflect my philosophy on teaching reading.
I think, the teacher can also have students dramatize the story. With the students she can prepare a setting like the one in the story and make them play the roles of the characters in the story. This activity again is benefi cial to the teacher to make sure the students’ comprehension and it is also good for children to improve their drama skills. Besides, this activity is also good for the young children to use their energy on something beneficial. As we all know young chilren have inexhaustible energy and they always want to move or play with something. Therefore using such activities will help them consume their energy and add some entertainment to the lesson.

In that video, some clues about reading comprehension is given. It can be hard to apply it in this way in every class but to teach how to understand a reading passage effectively we can use these techniques. I also believe that stories are very important and useful ways to improve reading skils I also do not believe that they can be used in every time. As my friends gave an example about stories and books already, I want to give my example video on this. I think it is useful and valid for intermediate and the upper levels.
In my example video teacher says that when the students are given a reading material, they should read quickly that material without looking dictionary and underline the unknown words to understand the context firstly.Secondly they should read again and by using dictionary summarize each paragraph of it. This will make them really understand what they are reading according to him. For the third step, the students read the whole material and summarize everything that they read. By doing these they will have read the article for three times and they must have understood the article. By doing this in their very first readings they will have the skills to improve their reading speed. Because by reading over and over again they will have learned idioms, phrases and words that they can see in another article.Every time they read new they can cut reading time in this way.

The two videos are the parts of the same reading session. Start with the first one and then continue with the second.

Children are my nightmare. Teaching them, and teaching them reading, may be the hardest thing in the world I thought. But the woman in the video seems to do it so nicely and comfortably that I am jelaous of her.
First of all, she raises some questions, makes students wonder what is in the book by looking at the cover.
"The season may be summer, why is she crying, are they real animals, what is going to happen etc" And we really want to know what is in. So she turns the book, looking at the back cover for some more information, which, not surprisingly we cannot find. This leaves onyle the inside of the book and she turns the pages, reading them aloud, imitating the characters with different voices which is fun.
Children's attention is so hard to attract and keep for a while. She does is such a perfect way. First, she makes them wonder and get enthusiastic. The way she speaks, her intonation also raises curiosity. The back of the book is empty, so she needs to turn the page and we have little sentences with big font and nice colorful pictures; the ultimate correct thing for children.
Because children are my fear, I am amazed by that demo. It seems to be the best way for children.

In this video we see an English reading class. In the video students read the reading passage aloud. It is intensive reading as it is seen. The teacher asks questions about the text and encourages students to speak in the class. It is useful I think, because students need to overcome their anxiety to become good language learners. In the video, we do not see what the teacher has done in the warm-up. If the teacher didn't do anything before reading the passage, it wouldn't be fruitful as the students didn't know much about the subject. On the other hand, I find the comprehension questions fruitful. They focus on meaning and shows if the students understand the text. In general there is a top-down approach, which focuses on meaning and tries to fit the input to our already existing schema. I think, before reading the passage aloud the students should read the text silently, which contributes students to learn faster. However, in this video students read aloud and it makes it difficult for students to understand and read the passage at the same time.

    Dear friends,
in this video you can see a good teacher who is not good at teaching language. He's full of fun, colorful and interesting. He is also very good at classroom management and has got what is calld professional charisma. He tries to teach his students how to read but he just makes them read aloud th words. Actually, reading passages aloud is an ongoing controversial issue; he is doing the worse. He is, unfortunately, using a method like audiolingual which is old-fashioned useless method. So, this is not a good way of teaching English.
I know most of you will wonder why I put this video if it is not for anything, but whether on word-basis or passage, reading aloud or repeating are the ons we should escape when we see. They are totally useless for learning. Some may claim that they may be used for pronunciation activities, but they have nothing to do with pronunciation, either. In my opinion pronunciation is directly related to listening; so you can pronunce a word that you can understand (or comprehend) in a wrong way, or vice versa. Parots can read out the words that they cannot understand. If an activity is not related to understanding; it has also nothing to do with reading.
    Thanks for reading...

In the video, the expert talks about teaching reading to young learners by using rhymes. I think it is a useful way. Children like games and as a teacher you should get their attention to topic you want to teach. Thus, you should make it interesting and entertaining for them. Using rhymes can be one of the ways that you can use. I like clapping hands to teach most. However, the others are useful and full of fun in my opininon.

First of all, my video is a bit different. It is a power point presentation and it is related to something different from reading strategies. The reason why I have chosen this video is that I believe teaching ( or knowing) content is sufficient for teaching reading. There are of course many strategies about teaching reading and they are important. They show us as prospective novice teachers especially the ways of teachig, in other words they guide us and show what way we sohuld start. However, this is not enough for teachers and for students to learn without knowledge of world and general culture. If we are able to achive this, we can easily teach reading to our students. There are some ways of accomplishing this aim; for exammple we may introduce them science, art, sports, history etc by watching videos, visiting museums or going to theatres and movies or some sport events. And also one important way of doing this is that we can give them external reading as they enjoy so that we use a reading strategy to teach them reading as meaningful.

I choose this video, because it includes many strategies of reading. there are different teachers and in each part there is a different method of reading and it applies each method on students with examples. the first way is reader response. students will recognize the beliefs, prior knowledge and past experiences they bring to the texts they read. there is some words and the students can connect these terms with their own lifes. second one is text coding. students will keep track of their thinking while reading a text using codes. the third one is reader theater, students will dramatilize a text in it. fourth one is double entry organizer. students will organize notes during the reading of a text, recording their questions and opinions. the fifth one is think aloud method. students will develop cognitive skills by verbalizing their thought processes. the teacher is silent in class. the last one is anticipation guide. in this method, students identify what they know before reading the text and what they learn after reading the text.

My video is about using rhyming while teaching reading. A teacher is explaining how one can teach reading by using rhyming. She says that it is an effective way for teaching reading. We can use different kinds of rhyming to catch their interest. For example, you can pretend like a small bird and read. I think it can catch the attention of children, especially the small ones. I think this way of teaching is also important for teaching vocabulary. We can look at our past experiences. I remember the songs our teacher taught us and these were useful for our learning vocabulary items. They also made reading easier

I think this video is a good example to see the failure of traditional methods. Just reading, and then wanting students to understand, to make inference from the text is not a true and useful method. Students can easily lose their attention and motivation through just reading. in order to prevent this, teacher should create cruosity in student's minds and and he should get students involved in the lesson by warm-up activities. Or else, he may want students to read the passage with a specific purpose in order to make them concantrate on the reading. Shortly, students should find and use new methods to make students more involved in the lesson and read more carefully.
