Self-evaluation of the reading presentations (as an individual and as a pair)

Dear FLE 304 members,
Please evaluate your own performance as an individual and as a pair by referring to each of the aspects the self-evaluation sheet that your instructor has provided for you. You need to make comments on the preparation stage and the actual teaching stage and the audience's perceptions of your presentation.

  1. As teacher candidites, we should learn how to apply the theories we learn to the performance and our presentations are the best ways to do so. With the help of my teachers and ELT courses, I am getting more familier to prepare and perform teaching presentations day by day; therefore, I can say that preparation stage of my micro teaching was not so hard. If I plan my course properly and find interesting and beneficial activities for the students, I do not face with such big problems in my performances. Thanks to my pair's, Bilge, harmonical work with me, there was no problem in the preperation stage.
In the performance, I can say that I was not bad. Of course, I do not say I was so perfect but I believe that I did my best. I smiled, interacted with students, answered their questions and encouraged them to participate to the class. However, maybe in my future teachings, I may try to be more careful about my language and my pronunciation.

  2. For preparation; both as a group and myself try to stick to the lesson plan, we followed it and did not do anything apart from it. While planning the lesson, I mostly consider how can I make this lesson enjoyable and how can I have a good communicaiton with the students and how can make a good entrance to the topic. If I were to teach again , I would speak more to the students and I would prepare the activity part more concretely because in this way it would be more enjoyable. I believe that I did my best for a successful lesson so I hope it was successful for other people. Except for thinking about how to make the lesson more enjoyable I did not have big problems by searching and brainstorming I solved it. Students are not real students so if I were in front of real intermediate students it would be different but I believe that I did not do anything wrong. My lovely students actively participate in class,I did not haave any controlling problem while presenting. I can say that I should be more careful about speaking.

  3. I prefer to comment on my presentation after I watch the video that was taken during our performances. Anyway, I noticed that I have not any tense mood in myself any more. I am really getting acquainted with the process and what I need to do. I am trying to smile all the time and I believe that this is an eternal warm-up process. :) I dont say that I am perfectly well, but in my opinion I am doing well for now :) however, I am always thinking about how to make students feel more comfortable, more involved, more cheered and so on. I am trying to have the 'more'. as time progress I will be much more fluent in my speaking but now I am pretty satisfied with what I have been doing. :)

  4. As I am always telling, we had the problem of timing. Actually, if we were in a real classroom environment with elementary-level students, I think, we could be successful.
After watching my video, I realized that we were good. It was a colorful lesson, full of audio-visual aids. There were jokes, and as a matter of fact, everything that a student may need was there.
To sum up, we were good, but should have been better.

  5. First of all according to our friends comments our topic was very good and beficial as it is a contraversial issue nowadays. We wanted our topic to be interesting and useful so we have reached our first aim. Then we made a good pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading everybody was very well prepared for his/her part and i studied while-reading. Choosing level as upper-intermediate was okay, the text was a little bit long, but students did not get bored. After they had read the text we talked about swine flu, and i tried to inform students about that disease. And then we did an true/false activity, i wanted everbody to answer the questions and then share with their friends. As for my performance, i sould study/work on my voice tone, i think the tone was flat. I managed to control every student as our class is not very crowded.
After the presentations giving feedback and especially our own videos help me a lot in seeing my mistakes. Now i think that video-recording is the best way to give feedback...

  6. I think we were successful in terms of preparing the presentation. We tried to choose an interesting topic for the student and integrated exercises for them. except the technological problem, everything was good enough. Althoug we checked the audio before, it did not work properly in the class. Another mistake of us was that we should have written simplier explanations for the words in matching exercise. however, as we read our friends' comments, we did a good job.

  8. Our lesson plan was deficient of the features that can attract the students’ attention. For instance there was no color, no colorful photos, videos etc. Therefore it didn’t take any attention from our class mates and from their being (extremely)bored during our presentation, I concluded that our lesson was not successful at all. As the lesson didn’t take their attention the participation was very low and so I felt extremely bad during the presentation. Since the problem was on the whole lesson plan (because it was so boring), we couldn’t compensate for it during the lesson. The only thing that our friends liked was the chocolate. We decided to give a chocolate just before the lesson (thanks to my pair Vildan:)) and when I saw that it was the only thing that took attention, I felt (again) miserable because that means if we hadn’t used it, our lesson would have been a great failure. In short, despite our classmates’ nice comments on our presentation (only because of their kindness not because of our lesson’s being good), I didn’t find our lesson successful.
When it comes to my individual performance it was not successful too. The reason of it was my not feeling comfortable. Since I didn’t feel relaxed, I couldn’t do or say anything other than what our lesson plan said. I mean, I couldn’t do any impromptu changes that can prevent our lesson from being extremely boring. In addition to this, when I watched the video I realized that I couldn’t hide my over nervousness and it was a bad impression for a teacher. I should try to do something to improve my performance as soon as possible, otherwise (in the future)on the first day of my working as a teacher, I will be fired:(

  9. After a tiring day and enjoyable presentation, here I am again to comment on my own performance :) Firstly, and the most importantly, I start to feel like a real teacher now, rather than a student who try to act as if she was a teacher. I feel much more comfortable and I enjoy what I am doing during my presentation.
Secondly, now I have an idea about how to teach reading, writing or the other skills which feels me more confident than before.
Thirdly, I realize that I really love to teach English which gives me the enthısiasm for my job.
To sum up, in this last integrated presentation I realize my potential to teach and how much I learned from my teachers and my friends. I learn to write a lesson plan, design a lesson, interact with students, arrange my time and plan and use my materials effectively. To practice what I learned, these presentation is the best opportunity.

  10. Being in front of people is a hard thing especially when you are not using your native language.
Our topic, swine flu was something everybody talked about but very few knew about. Everybody was scared thanks to our sick-minded media. So we thought that it would be a good idea to inform people, give them advice about the disease so that they would be less scared, more confident and knowledgeable.
The text was long but not hard or boring, at least it is my idea. I hope no one got bored. The use of PowerPoint was nice because vocabulary teaching and learning is more effective, easy and fun with it. We also used some example sentences so that students can see the unfamiliar words in context. I preferred a multiple choice test to consume less time and make it all easy and more enjoyable. I think we were ok but we sure have a long way ahead of us.

  11. ı agree with ikbal, ı think it is really hard thing, but ı think we have improved ourselves when we compare ourselves with the first times. when ı come to our presentation, ı think our topic was very interesting, because everybody knows a bit and curious about martin luther king, freedom and his famous speech. it was also informative and students contributed to the class very much. first we showed them some pictures and asked them to what comes to their mind. it was effective, because they guessed some words related to the pictures and we wrote them to the board. it was a nice brainstorming activity and helped them to get ready to the lesson. the passage and activities were well designed ı think. the vocabulary and comprehension activities were fit with the passage. our last activity also enjoyabla and interesting. they write a paraghraph about their people on the card and then they tried to guess who it is. actually the names on the cards were all famous turkish and foreign people. the activity attracted them very much. actually we could give a small present to the winner group. finally, the homework was very creative ı think. they would find the martin luther king's famuos speech ' ı have a dream' and they would write a reflection paper. of course we should learn more things, but we struggled and tired to do our best.

  12. I think our presentation wasn't a successful one, because it was a bit ordinary. Students didn't want to participate in the lesson and they were right, since the lesson was boring. Belkıs did a really good entry. She made students speak and think about the lesson. Reading paragraph was nice and interesting. Thanks Belkıs for this good topic, because she had chosen it. Inroduction and conclusion of the passage were totally different. In my part, writing acitivity was good. Students created really original conclusions and I think they enjoyed it. Of course, the best part of our presentation was chocolates:) In a real classroom, ıt would be a good reinforcement for motivation.

  13. I think these presentations will help us to be good teachers. As it was my first reading presentation, I was a bit nervous. I was also nervous while preparing the presentation. We tried to find an interesting topic and I think we found it:) It was an interesting topic for the students. Everybody has some idea about this topic. We thought that choosing a topic about which everybody can say something would be a good idea. I think the students liked it. The first part was effective in brainstorming. The activities were appropriate to reading passage and to topic. The last activity was especially good in that it was a group activity and made students work colleborately. It also helped them make brainstorming. I think our lesson was an integrated one. There was some pictures, reading, writing, video which made our lesson a rich one. We had a problem while opening the video which we compensate in the homework. We gave the video as homework. As it was our first presentation, we were a bit nervous, but thanks to our instructor and friends, our tension decreased. Thanks everybody:)

  14. I think our presentation was not bad at all. Thanks to our classmates contributions we had a chance to perform our lesson plan that we've prepared beforehand. I guess, we were better compared to our first presentation. We are getting more and more familiar to the process of teaching everyday. Thanks to our instructors' feedback we are learning how to better involve in process. Our presentation was an integrated one and the topic was "health" We attempted to integrate writing with listening and reading activities.we used a short video at the beginning and we ended the lesson with a fun(I hope it was)writing activity in which stdudents were required to write a story by using the given words. It was a pleasure for me to be with class this semester. So,thank you everbody :)

  15. I think our presentation was good but it could be better . There were some aspects which can be developped. Nevertheless I think it was good. Because the topic was a current subject in that time. Many people were afraid of swine flue and there were many superstitions about it and also many people are misinformed about it. Because of these we chose the topic of swine flu. Then we took a text from WHO website. Then we prepared comprehension questions with the usage of visual aids, comics and pictures with definition and examples of the unknown words. Then in the evaluation part we asked some questions about the text . In overall, I think it was succusful presentation.

  17. When I think about our own presentation, I can say that it was a successful presentation overall. While preparing the presentation we took some aspects of a successful lesson into consideration. These were lesson planning, integrating different skills and attracting students' atention. We combined reading with speaking and writing. We also thought some vocabulary items about the food. The passage about the food in USA was used in order to give the students a general idea about what people eat in the USA, because the culture of the target language is important and needed to be acquired by the students. Fot this porpuse we used pictures to make it for easy for the students. When we come to how we gave the presentation, we didn't have timing problem. The contest part took the students' attention and the students both used their writing and speaking skills. I also want to speak about the parts that I didn't like. I should have spoken more fluently and been more relax. The instructions and time required for the activities also should have been explained more clearly.
